Nomads Whites go top of Ravenscroft Manx Shield
Big wins for Nomads’ Whites and Ramsey’s Blues saw a change at the top of the Manx Shield standings. The Whites moved into top spot when they beat Nomads Greens 59-24 at Ballakilley while at the Mooragh Park, Ramsey’s Blues beat their Reds 64-29. The third scheduled match between Castletown and Western Vikings was conceded by Castletown.
At the Mooragh Ivo Morrey a wing turned flanker opened up the Blues’ account after just six minutes from close range. Brandon Atchison doubled the lead on eleven minutes when he picked up on a Reds handling error to touch down under the posts and convert his own try. The Reds replied on quarter of an hour after skipper Matt Meechan had gone close. He set up ruck ball which was spun wide to full back Luke Ward who dived in to score and leave the Reds trailing 12-7 after Nathan Robson’s touchline conversion.
Either side of the twenty minute mark the Blues struck again. Dan Richmond ran the ball close to the line and Morrey acting in the scavenger role finished off for the first while for the second, it was the other Richmond brother Jake who capitalised on another Reds handling error after Ross Quayle had snaffled the loose ball. Before the half hour was up the Blues had added a further two scores, both from solo runs from their quick men. Dan Richmond raced in for the first of these before Harri Radford beat six men for the second. Brandon Atchison converted both to leave the Blues 36-7 ahead with half time looming.
The Reds struck back before the break. Connor Cracknell galloped in for the first of two late first half tries. Nathan Robson converted. Just before the whistle, skipper Meechan crossed too to leave the Blues 36-19 ahead. Five minutes into the second half Meechan went in for his second following a five metre scrum and Robson converted. In the ninth minute the Reds worked an opening for Luke Ward wide on the left wing and his try made it a one score game with the Blues leading 36-29.
That however was the last shot in the locker for the Reds. Jake Richmond powered in for his second at the other end and both Atchison and Morrey completed their hat tricks as the Blues accelerated away to a 64-29 lead and kept a scoreless final fifteen minutes. The scoreline doesn’t necessarily reflect the closeness of the sides in this tie. Three unforced handling errors from the Reds led to twenty one of the Blues’ points. Remove them from the equation and it looks a little more reflective.
