A kicking masterclass in horrible conditions
Ramsey Reds beat Southern Nomads Greens 73-12 at a wet and windy Mooragh Park and took top slot in the Manx Shield.
Nomads started into the strong wind and in the opening five minutes they really took the game to Ramsey. Orry Watterson twice surged for the tryline but was just kept out. After weathering the early storm it was Ramsey who opened the scoring. Brandon Atchison’s straight running saw him burst through the Nomads defence. Five minutes later it was Atchison’s centre partner Jake Richmond turn. Nomads attempted a long midfield pass. Richmond read it, intercepted and raced in to score. Atchison converted for a 12-0 lead.
The lead was doubled to twenty-four before the end of the first quarter. Atchison raced in for his second down the left wing and scrum half Nathan Robson broke up the centre celebrations when he finished off a break created by the pace of hooker Ben Hardman. Atchison added a further conversion as Ramsey secured their try bonus point. Conor Goodall, skipper Matt Meechan and second row Eddie Lord all added tries before half time and with Atchison’s conversions Ramsey led 45-0 by half time.
When Conor Goodall bagged his second of the game in the first minute of the second half things were looking grim for Nomads. They did however start to use the wind and gain some territory. This in turn put Ramsey under pressure and Nomads eventually struck back in the fifty second minute. After a typical Watterson crash ball had committed the Ramsey midfield, George Callister found some quick ball which was fired to the right and Sam Kennaugh was able to finish off for a well deserved score.
The resurgence didn’t last long. From the restart Atchison completed his hat trick, Nathan Brew celebrated his senior debut with a well finished score down the left wing and Jake Richmond picked up his second after starting a move from his own twenty two allowing Eddie Lord to make the hard yards up the middle then popping up at the end to claim the honours.
These Ramsey scores pushed the lead out to 73-5, but it was Nomads who had the final say. They earned a five metre lineout and Watterson’s throw was picked off by Josh Corteen in the Ramsey line. Corteen however could only tap it back and as the wind got hold of the ball Watterson pounced and dived in for the try. George Callister added the extras to round off a solid second half for the Southerners.
