Nomads Whites opened their account in the Manx Trophy with a 36-22 win at home against Ramsey Blues & Western Vikings. The backbone of the win was built around an opening twenty minute period where they racked up a 22-0 lead from which the Ramsey/Viking team never really recovered.
The first try came in the fifth minute when back rower Keiran Maddrell popped up wide on the left and dived in. Four minutes later Orry Watterson pounded through the front line of the defence. The ball was recycled quickly to Finn McGregor and he raced in for the second. Mark Young converted for a 12-0 lead.
As quarter of an hour approached, they were in again. This time the set piece did the damage. A five metre scrummage saw the Nomads eight apply pressure to the defence. Watterson broke from the base but was held up short however Sam Kennaugh was following up and he burst over the line to score. In the nineteenth minute another Nomad set piece worked its magic. Conor McCaughan claimed an attacking line out and Mike Evans surged over the line from close range to make it 22-0.
At this point the Ramsey/Viking team needed some inspiration or the game could run away from them. They got it when a Nomads attack faltered. Henry Swithinbank secured the ball for his side and offloaded to Sam Tarpey. He raced sixty metres down the left touchline to score. As half time approached the visitors got another break. Kieran Kneale hacked the ball downfield and under the Nomads posts. The slippery ball in the wet grass was too difficult for the defence to gather and Brandon Atchison was lurking and managed to dive on the loose ball to score. He converted his own try to leave the Ramsey/Vikings team trailing 22-12.
Five minutes into the second half Nomads increased their lead. A lineout inside the twenty two gave clean ball off the top. Mark Young angled towards the posts and popped a neat inside pass to the charging Harry Corrin who was unstoppable. Young converted to make it 29-12.
A Jake Richmond double then hauled Ramsey/Vikings right back into it. His first in the fifty ninth minute came after a period of concerted pressure deep in the Nomads half. His second in the seventy fourth minute came from a Ben Hardman break. With five minutes remaining the Nomads lead was down to just seven points at 29-22.
There was to be no grandstand finish though. In the final minute a lung busting break from Mike Evans gave Nomads field position and Corrin crossed for his second to make the game safe with Young converting.
