Whispering Death in action
Castletown beat Ramsey 60-24 at a windy Mooragh Park with the star of the day undoubtedly Josh Corteen who played for both teams, scoring a total of four tries and two conversions in the process.
Ramsey took the initial lead in the seventh minute when Tynan Pritchard threaded a grubber kick in behind the defence and sent Will Millsopp in pursuit. The defence fumbled the ball leaving the big centre with a simple touchdown. Town struck back on the quarter hour. They’d set up ruck ball ten metres inside the Ramsey half and scrum half Craig Martin sneaked down the blind side to score. He converted his own try to put his side in front.
The Josh Corteen show then arrived in town. The Ramsey second rower was on loan to Castletown for the afternoon and he struck twice before half time. His first was from a powerful run through some indifferent tackling and his second from a Craig Martin tap penalty. Martin did the hard yards to get close to the Ramsey line and Corteen applied the finish to leave Castletown 17-5 ahead at the break.
Two minutes into the second half Corteen completed his hat trick. Ryan Wren, also on loan to Castletown for the day, made the initial break down the left touchline and his offload gave Corteen a clear run to the line. He converted his own try. This opened the floodgates and Town quickly racked up a big lead. Craig Martin bagged his second from another Wren break. Kieran Kneale then found a gap in the Ramsey line to touch down under posts with Martin adding the extras. Jack Goodwin then galloped home wide on the left and he was quickly followed by Wilf Hewson with Harry Goodwin converting. The 17-5 half time lead was suddenly 48-5.
With the game already lost Ramsey made some changes. Corteen and Wren had their loans called in and they swapped sides with Neil Hulme and Will Millsopp replacing them in the Castletown line up. This move was unsuccessful as Millsopp ran a try in for Castletown on sixty one minutes and Hulme went over in sixty four. A Harry Goodwin conversion extended the lead to 60-5.
Ramsey’s changes finally bore fruit in the last ten minutes. Ryan Wren went over from close range with Sam Corlett converting. With five to go Corteen dived in for his fourth of the day and converted it himself and right at the end Sam Corlett went over for Ramsey’s fourth which gave them a try bonus point. The result has no effect on the standings. Ramsey remain top and Castletown remain bottom but have closed the gap a little.
