The IOM Barbarians experiment in the Manx Shield ended with a 62-31 defeat in a high scoring affair at the Mooragh Park.
Ramsey took the lead after just three minutes when Eddie Plaatjies marked his senior debut with a try. This was quickly cancelled out when Tom Dutnall went in at the other end and the teams remained locked together at 5-5 until twenty minutes had elapsed. Jake Richmond broke the deadlock for Ramsey. He carried the ball right up to the Barbarian defence and then sent Nathan Robson clear to score under the posts. Brandon Atchison added the conversion. Three minutes later Atchison raced in for a try of his own and converted again. From the restart, Ramsey number eight Dave Keenan found a gap in the defence and he punched through it before releasing Richmond for his second which Atchison almost inevitably converted to make the lead 26-5.
Just after the half hour Nathan Robson ran in his second to stretch the lead further however the Barbarians started to hit back immediately. Ramsey were slow to clear from inside their own twenty two and were punished. Conor McCaughan swooped on a loose ball and dotted down. Jack Caine converted. Then, two minutes before half time they were in again. Harry Corrin powered over from five metres out and Caine again converted. The final play of the first half however was Ramsey’s. Chris King made the break and Brandon Atchison picked from the base of the ruck and fended off the defence to score. His conversion left Ramsey in front 38-19 at the interval.
Two tries in three minutes from Ramsey’s Jake Richmond early in the second half effectively killed off any resistance. The Ramsey centre dribbled the ball upfield for the first and he used his pace for the second to claim a hat trick. Atchison converted both to make it 52-19. Atchison then broke down the right flank and created space on the left where Brayden Roche raced in for his first of the game. Just shy of the hour, Atchison then went in for his hat trick try and by this stage Ramsey had built an unassailable 62-19 lead.
The Barbarians did get the final say though. Norman Winterbach went over for a try six from the end and Harry Corrin raced in from halfway for his second which he converted himself.
