Douglas made it three from three in the Manx Cup qualifiers to book their place in the 3rd May Final with a 50-5 defeat of Ramsey at Port-e-Chee on Thursday night.
A couple of late pull outs for Ramsey saw the game start with uncontested scrums but that didn’t seem to slow Douglas down any. A second minute penalty gave them a five metre scrum and Nathan Robson crashed through the Ramsey defence for the opening try which he converted himself. Douglas continued their early pressure, playing the game mostly in the Ramsey half and just after the ten minute mark the defence cracked again and Conor Stephens raced in for the first of his two. Robson added the conversion for a 14-0 lead.
There was more of the same constant pressure for the next ten minutes and once again the Ramsey defence was exposed with Craig McGee diving in to score. Robson again converted. The bonus point try arrived just before the half hour mark when Douglas number eight Liam Kirkpatrick broke clear of some indifferent tackling to score under the posts. Robson added his fourth conversion for a 28-0 lead. This became 33-0 with the final play of the first half when Douglas skipper Blake Snell crossed following a forward drive.
Just three minutes into the second half it got worse for Ramsey. A touch finding kick missed its mark and was fielded by Douglas paceman Kyle Martin. He galloped upfield, offloaded to Conor Stephens who in turn found the supporting Nathan Robson who went in for his second to make it 38-0.
The scoring rate then slowed as Ramsey finally began to enjoy some possession. They worked their way into the Douglas twenty two down the left flank before Tom Moffatt spotted space on the right. His Crossfield kick was fielded by Will Millsopp and he passed neatly inside for Luke Ward to get his side on the scoreboard.
That however was the extend of the Ramsey revival. The Douglas defence held firm for the final twenty minutes and engineered two further tries. Kyle Martin bagged the first after Ramsey were stripped while going forward and Conor Stephens got the second which was also his second, after Blake Snell’s perfectly timed charge got in behind the Ramsey front line tackles. Robson added the conversion to round things off. There was a late yellow card for Douglas’ Rob Todd but it didn’t alter the scoreboard.
