Ramsey picked up their first win of the season in Counties 3 ADM Lancs/Cheshire with a 41-28 victory against Hoylake in a thriller at the Mooragh Park.
After a jittery start which saw Ramsey full back Luke Ward have a clearance kick charged down, the home side quickly found their straps. An attacking scrum on the Hoylake twenty two gave Ramsey some clean ball. It fizzed along the back line and a quick change of pace from Jake Richmond saw him glide through a gap to pick up Ramsey’s opener. Dan Kelly converted. Just after ten minutes Kelly was back in action again. He nailed a fifty-twenty two from the tightest of angles, Hoylake went offside at the ensuing line-out and Kelly drilled home the penalty for a 10-0 lead.
Four minutes later Ramsey were in again. Brandon Atchison found a gap in the Hoylake defence and needed no second invitation. He raced clear to score with Kelly again converting for a 17-0 lead. Hoylake finally responded and using a simple pick and go game they made their was deep into Ramsey’s half. A string of penalties ensued with the ultimate beneficiary being Hoylake prop Darren Agnew who bashed over to score. Ross Jones added the extras.
Ramsey quickly restored the balance. Within four minutes of Agnew’s try, Luke Ward went over at the other end when he linked with Brayden Roche in midfield. Roche’s pinpoint chip ahead went in behind the defence and Ward was able to regather to score. Kelly’s conversion made it 24-7.
Hoylake then hit top gear and ran in two before half time. Both were as a result of pressure inside the Ramsey half and some excellent carrying by try scorer Agnew and hooker Andy Muir. Full back Jack Jones went n for the first and skipper Conner Bradshaw bagged the second. Two more Ross Jones conversions left the half time score showing Ramsey just in front at 24-21.
Four minutes into the second half saw a hammer blow for the Ramsey faithful when Hoylake scored again. Ramsey conceded a penalty in their own half and Ross Jones kicked his side into the corner. From the lineout Darren Agnew went close and the recycled ball found its way to Jack Jones who went in for his second of the afternoon. Ross Jones converted and Ramsey were behind 28-24.
The Ramsey bench was quickly emptied and the fresh legs paid dividends. At fifty five minutes they finally retook the lead. Brandon Atchison picked a perfect line to slice through the Hoylake line for his second of the game. Kelly inevitably kicked the conversion and five minutes late a second penalty which gave Ramsey a 34-28 lead with just under twenty to play.
Both teams pushed relentlessly looking for the game winning moment. It arrived in the seventy third minute. Hoylake poured forward into the Ramsey twenty two and it seemed that a score was looming until a long pass drifted too close to the Ramsey defensive line. Jake Richmond snaffled the ball and lit up everything he had for a lungbusting eighty metre run. He just outpaced the chasing Jack Jones and dotted down under the posts. Dan Kelly converted to give himself a flawless afternoon with the boot.
