Ffinlo Corkill scores
Ramsey put in a strong performance to beat Vagabonds 47-7 in the Hartford Homes Manx Cup. Because of their hectic League schedule Vagas rested a number of players for this game and Ramsey showed no mercy, although two very late converted tries gave the scoreboard a look which perhaps didn’t do justice to Vagas’ efforts.
The opening twenty minutes were largely forgettable with neither side really getting to grips with the game. That changed in the twenty second minutes. Vagas had thwarted a Ramsey attack deep in their on twenty two and earned a defensive five metre scrum to clear their lines. The Ramsey front five however gave a little nudge and hooker Ben Hardman took the ball against the head. Ramsey skipper Matt Meechan then launched from number eight and barrelled his way over the line to score. Scott Kneale converted for a 7-0 lead.
As half time approached Ramsey seized the initiative with two tries in three minutes. Ffinlo Corkill got the first after Ramsey had earned a penalty after a Kieran Kneale line break. The ball was tapped quickly and Corkill dived in despite the close attention of Vagas captain Leo Marques. The second came from quick ball off the top of a midfield line out. In a training ground back move Tom Moffatt delayed his pass and found centre Jake Richmond on a cut back line and his power allowed hikm to slice through the defence to score. Scott Kneale converted for a 19-0. Half time lead.
As the second half got underway Ramsey pressed home their advantage. Just two minutes in they generated quick ball. Full back Luke Ward joined the line as an extra man and strolled through to score. Scott Kneale again converted and the lead was 26-0.
Vagas hit back in the fifty third minute. Ramsey were turned over in attack and Vagas shipped the ball quickly to left wing Seb Iveagh who was making his senior debut. He hugged the left touchline and hit the boost button. His pace took him clear of the Ramsey defence and he galloped in under the posts. Brendan Kelly added the extras and a Vagas comeback seemed possible.
Just before the hour Luke Ward killed off the comeback. The Ramsey full back again joined the backline in attack and was lurking wide on the left. Moffatt threw a long looping pass to outflank the defence and Ward ran in his second. Kneale converted and Ramsey led 33-7.
It looked like the game would finish on that score however in the final two minutes Ramsey ran into more converted tries. Josh Corteen got the first with a big run up the middle of the park and he converted it himself. From the restart Ramsey replacement Loki Reader, another debutant made a copycat break and dotted down under the posts. Scott Kneale converted to give the scoreboard a somewhat flattering look.
