An impressive second half performance saw Ramsey run out 54-7 winners against Southern Nomads with scrum half Dan Richmond netting twenty-four points on his own. It took a little while for the teams to get to grips with the wet and windy conditions and Ramsey were the first. In the seventeenth minute, Nomads attempted to run the ball out of their own half. The ball was fumbled in the strong wind and Ramsey wing Brandon Atchison scooped it up and raced in for the opening try which Dan Richmond converted.
The 7-0 lead didn’t last though. Mark Young’s boot, plus some forward graft brought Nomads to within five metres of the Ramsey line and earned an attacking scrum. From the set piece, scrum half Jacob Meechan darted down the blind side and over for the try. Young converted and the game was all square.
Five minutes before half time it was the Ramsey forwards’ turn to apply pressure. They worked their way into the Nomads twenty-two and earned a string of penalties as the Southern discipline slipped. The last penalty was tapped quickly by Dan Richmond and he dived in for the try which he converted himself to leave Ramsey 14-7 ahead at the break.
When the teams turned around, Ramsey had the wind at their backs and Tom Moffatt wasted no time in using it. He kicked deep into the Nomads half to give his side field position. The Ramsey pack rumpled from a few metres out and Rory Nicholson was the beneficiary as he was driven over the line for the opening score. Richmond’s conversion attempt drifted wide but was the only kick he missed all game. Before ten minutes had elapsed, Ramsey claimed the try bonus point. Matt Meechan made the initial break down the right and the ball was recycled quickly for Dave Keenan to power through the defence. Richmond inevitably converted and Ramsey were clear at 26-7.
With Nomads pinned back in their own half and playing into the wind, they were forced to try and keep the ball in hand. After quarter of an hour, they came unstuck. A fumble in their own in-goal area left the ball spinning on the ground and Dan Richmond struck like a snake to touch it down for his second which he converted.
With just over ten to play Matt Meechan struck twice in two minutes to put the result beyond any doubt. His first was a pushover try in the twenty eighth minute after his forwards earned him a five metre scrum and shunted Nomads back over their own line. The second was a powerful break from just outside the twenty-two which broke three tackles on his way to the line. Richmond converted both for a 47-7 lead then as the final seconds ticked away, Conor Goodall struck for Ramsey to bring up the fifty and Richmond’s seventh conversion of the afternoon was the final play of the game.
