Newly crowned Manx Trophy champions Douglas North were uncrowned at the Mooragh when Ramsey pulled a 19-7 win out of the bag.
Brandon Atchison opened the scoring for Ramsey in the fourteenth minute when he drifted in off his wing and sliced through the Douglas defence in a pre-planned move. Dan Richmond converted for a 7-0 lead. Just four minutes later the lead was doubled. Where running lines got the opening score, brute force got the second. Ramsey number eight Matty Meechan picked up the ball just inside the Douglas twenty-two and set off for the line. Bouncing defenders off he smashed his way over for a try which Dan Richmond converted for a 14-0 lead.
Douglas then finally arrived at the party. Jack Shimmin slotted a kick through the Ramsey rush defence for Kyle Martin to chase. Ramsey full back Jake Richmond however was up to the task on his debut and he beat Martin to the ball and cleared the danger. Just before half time though, Douglas finally overwhelmed the defence. Shay Waterworth linked up with Kyle Martin on the right and when the ball was recycled quickly number eight Karl Evans powered in to put Douglas on the scoreboard. Jack Shimmin converted and reduced the Ramsey lead to 14-7 at the break.
Douglas came out of the blocks quickest in the second half but Ramsey’s defence held firm and in the fifty third minute defence was turned into attack. Dan Richmond broke clear inside the Ramsey half and weaved his way downfield. He was felled by a high tackle and Ramsey elected for a kick at goal from the ensuing penalty. Richmond took it himself but his kick drifted wide.
The remainder of the second half remained score free as both sides slugged it out in midfield and neither really dominating. With three minutes to go however Ramsey sealed the game. A persistent period of pressure from the Ramsey forwards saw them lay siege to the Vagas line. Rory Nicholson and Jamie Arneil both went close from a short distance out before Ramsey skipper Eddie Lord barged across the whitewash to score. Tom Moffatt’s conversion came back off the post leaving it at 19-7 with insufficient remaining time for Douglas to reduce the deficit.
