Ramsey beat a much-improved Southern Nomads 26-10 at Ballakilley Park and cemented their place at the top of the standings.
Nomads took a seventh minute lead when Ramsey were too slow rolling away from the tackle. The resulting penalty was right in front of goal and well within Mark Young’s range. He drilled his kick through the uprights for a 3-0 lead. Ramsey hit back eight minutes later in their first real attack. Jack Roberts snaffled a Nomads line out. Conor Goodall trucked the ball into the Nomads midfield and found a route to the line. He was stopped just short but scrum half Dan Richmond was on hand to finish. He converted his own try to put Ramsey 7-3 in front.
It took Ramsey another fifteen minutes to break down the Nomads defence but when they finally did, they picked up two tries in three minutes. The first came from a quickly tapped penalty. Skipper Matt Meechan hammered the ball into the Nomads forwards. Quick ruck ball was secured and the ball was moved right to where Ben Harding had joined the backline from full back and he slid in for the try. Dan Richmond converted to double his side’s score.
From the restart it was try time again. Ramsey prop Adam Dunlop fielded the ball and set off downfield. He evaded the first up tackler and found himself in clear space with the try line beckoning. He was eventually dragged down just outside the twenty two and with skipper Meechan on hand to secure the ruck, second row Josh Corteen was able to pick and go from the base and he strolled in unopposed. As ever, Richmond converted and the scoreboard looked very different with Ramsey 21-3 up at half time.
Nomads came out of the blocks quicker for the second half. They were positively buzzing around the pitch hassling and harassing at every opportunity. Orry Watterson carried with menace and Mark Young kicked out of hand intelligently. They soon had Ramsey pinned deep in their own territory and as often happens, a mistake was made. Attempting one pass too many presented Nomads with a dropped ball. Django Kinley seized it and powered in from twenty metres. Young converted and left Nomads trailing 21-10.
After Kinley had created another chance for Nomads wide on the left, Ramsey went on the offensive. Josh Abley kicked them downfield and the forwards earned a penalty five from the line. Rory Nicholson took it into contact, Dan Richmond had a little snipe but it was replacement second row Mikey Craine who finally crossed the whitewash to secure Ramsey’s try bonus point and the win.
