In the Bowl, the game was a real cat and mouse affair with the lead changing hands several times. Harry Parsons and Ross Quayle combined for the opening score two minutes in. Parson’s break was finished well by Quayle who was making his senior debut. Vagas Hornets struck back five minutes later. Orry Watterson’s drive was held up just short of the Ramsey line but Tom Rowley was on hand to finish off and level the score.
From the restart Watterson was again in the thick of the action. His powerful carry sucked in the Ramsey midfield and the ball was moved left to Callum Bratty who dived in to put Vagas back in front. They held the lead for almost fifteen minutes before Ramey stole it back. Ali Trace ran the ball out of defence. He found Archie Callaghan and ran a loop. When Callaghan was halted he offloaded out the back door to Trace who took the pass without breaking stride to score the first of his two. Callaghan converted to put Ramsey 12-10 ahead.
The lead didn’t last long beyond the restart. Vagas ploughed into the Ramsey twenty-two and scrum half Ciaran Stephens spotted a poorly defended ruck. He picked and went from the base to score and retake the lead 15-12 with ten to play before half time. In the thirty seventh minute Ramsey snatched it back. The forwards grafted away inside the Vagas half and second row Jared May was the ultimate beneficiary and his try together with an Archie Callaghan conversion gave Ramsey a 19-15 advantage at the break.
A score from Callum Coulthard early in the second half put Vagas back in front and three minutes later Bratty ran in his second of the game to stretch the Hornets lead to 25-19 with twenty to go. The final quarter was however Ramsey’s and they ran in four unanswered scores to finish the game. Ali Trace got his second with a lovely solo run just after the hour with Callaghan converting. Michael Broderick picked one up ten from the end to commemorate his senior debut with Callaghan again converting. Callaghan then got in on the act with one of his own using his pace down the left touchline and added the conversion. Jared May then rounded the game off with some nice interplay with Kevyn De Souza on the right wing before galloping in under the posts. Callaghan again converted for a fifteen point haul on his senior debut.
The other scheduled Bowl game between Emerging Nomads and Western Vikings was conceded by Vikings who were struggling with isolating players which means that Ramsey’s advantage in the standings is unassailable and they’ll be presented with the Bowl at their final game next Saturday.
