Ramsey took a very early lead when late replacement Dan Richmond stole Vagas line out ball and strolled in unopposed. Darragh Pilkington converted for a 7-0 lead. Pilkington added a penalty in the sixteenth minute and three minutes later he converted Dan Richmond’s second of the game after he’d tapped a quick five metre penalty.
With the Ramsey lead at 17-0 it was time for Vagas to come alive and come alive they did. Ed Alderson started the fightback with a big line break down the middle of the pitch and into the fierce headwind. His efforts weren’t wasted and the ball wass shipped wide to the right where Vagas utility replacement Matt Rockwell was on hand to score. Seven minutes later they were in again. Gabriel Fortin raced clear down the lakeside touchline. He was stopped just short but with their tails up Vagas were unstoppable and flanker Stephan de Beer applied the finishing touch. There was more to come from Vagas and within two minutes they were over again. Skipper Ethan Kermode was given just too much space and he raced through the Ramsey backline and ran in from forty metres to leave the lead at just two points at 17-15. With the last play of the first half Ramsey clawed one back at the other end. Vagas conceded a string of penalties and it was Ben Harding who finally squeezed over the line to leave his side in front 22-15 at half time.
Five minutes into the second half Ramsey extended their lead. Jared May made the big yards down the right. The move was kept alive by Ross Quayle who ran close to the Vagas line before he was felled. His offload however was good and found half time replacement Chris King on hand to score. Ten minutes later Vagas were back into it. Rockwell burst over from close range for his second of the match and Cole Donnelly’s conversion made the Ramsey lead 27-22.
The comeback ended there for Vagas. On the hour Dan Richmond completed his hat trick with a solo run before leaving the field injured. He was replaced by former club captain Henry Swithinbank who was simply visiting but pressed into service from the sideline and with five to go he made the game safe with a lungbusting run from inside his own twenty two.
