Ramsey B suffered some early discipline problems in the Plate final. A string of penalties led them to a team warning in the opening stages and in the fourteenth minute centre Ali Trace was the fall guy. He picked up ten minutes in the sin bin for his offside penalty and Emerging Nomads were quick to take advantage. Trace had barely left the field when Nomads’ centre Tony Quinn coasted through the Ramsey midfield to open the scoring. Two minutes later and Nomads were in again. Quinn’s pace opened up a hole in the Ramsey back line and right-wing Liam Savage had an easy run in for their second and a 10-0 lead.
Once back up to full strength Ramsey started to make inroads and on the half hour mark they pulled back a score. Callum Clague’s drive for the line was halted a yard or two short but hooker Chris Hardisty was on hand to pick and go from the base of the ruck and cross the line. The resurgence however was temporary. From the restart Nomads went long and the ball was fired deep into the Ramsey twenty two. The Nomad chase was good and didn’t allow Ramsey to clear the lines. The ball was turned over and Tom Collister went in for his side’s third of the day to lead 19-5 at half time.
Just three minutes into the second half Nomads scored again. Percy Hampton picked a perfect line through the Ramsey midfield. Once in behind he drew the full back and offloaded to Tony Quinn who galloped in for his second of the match and a 20-5 lead. Things then went from bad to worse for Ramsey. The forwards had built a promising position in the Nomads twenty-two and with everyone committed to going forward, a pass was picked off by Nomads’ veteran centre Harry Brereton and he lit up everything he had for an eighty metre run in. Sean Christian converted for a 27-5 lead.
Ramsey sent on reinforcements in the form of Dale Radcliffe and the big centre was in action immediately. His surge for the line fifteen minutes in was halted just short, but the ball was recycled quickly and zipped wide to left wing Euan Harmer who applied the finishing touch and clipped the Nomads lead to 27-10.
With just over fifteen to go Nomads seized on a Ramsey mistake for the try which clinched the game. Ramsey were forced to chase the scoreboard and attempted a quick tap penalty in their own twenty two. A pass wide went astray and the quickest to reach was Nomads wing Gerard Landels and he dived on the loose ball for a 32-10 lead.
As the clock ticked down Ramsey continued to attack and gave Nomads some worrying moments. Seven from the end Jamie Arneil drove over from close range to provide a glimmer of hope to the Mooragh faithful. With three to go Dale Radcliffe finally had some success with his straight running and he crashed through the Nomads defence to leave Nomads 32-20 in front. Then, in the final minute it was Radcliffe again, this time diving in from close range leave it at 32-25 and while there was time for a restart, Ramsey were unable to work another score.
